This workshop is designed to help students move from painting what they see to using what they see as a jumping off point for a more interesting and expressive plein air painting. Students will learn how to search for and select an interesting subject, how to use personal expression through edgework, color, tonal key, shapes, paint application and unique viewpoints. Use of color, tonal key, shapes, edges and brushwork (paint application) are all tools artists can use to set their work apart, taking it from ordinary to sublime and satisfying. Each day begins with a demo then after lunch, individual attention and engaging exercises will make this a memorable and exciting workshop. Students will leave with new confidence and skills.

Students need to be prepared for outside painting, weather permitting.  Space is limited; please contact the Art Center at BlueRidgeArts.programming@gmail.com for workshop information and registration.  Artworks created during the Workshop are not eligible for the Plein Air Event judging and awards on Sunday.

*CLASS REGISTRATION is not included in the standard event registration*

INSTRUCTOR
Brenda Pinnick

Like so many others, my earliest recollection of art making left an indelible mark on my life. It was transformative in that art could take me anywhere I wanted to be. It still does.
I paint en plein air mostly for that very purpose. There is a magic to interpreting onto a 2-d canvas, the essence of a scene by using subtle shifts in color temperature and saturation to communicate the exact day and its unique quality of light and atmosphere. Landscapes offer endless opportunities to explore shapes, lines, color, value and depth and give me immense satisfaction as a representational artist. My goal with each painting is to achieve a true sense of place.
Art can lift troubled spirits, express hopes and dreams and inspire others to look beyond the obvious for truth. I feel incredibly lucky to get up each day and spend time in my studio!

Creative Work includes:
-Hallmark Cards, Gift and Party Studio, Hybrid Designer creating surface design and product design for Gold Crown products
-Plaid Enterprises, Lead Designer, Design Manager, Art Direction, Product Development
-Independent Designer, licensing art and product design to manufacturers in the craft and hobby industry. QVC and Home Shopping Network presenter of my own branded products.
