Plein Air Workshop: Mixing Color to Suggest LightSeptember 6 & 7, 2023
Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced 2 Sessions- (Wednesday and Thursday) 9:30 am - 5:30 pm Instructor: Phil Starke Class Fee: $325.00 non-members $292.50 BRMAA members In this two-day workshop, we will focus on simplifying the main aspects of painting a landscape. We want to be able to “see” as an artist, not as a camera. Students will learn how to simplify the subject to large masses and simple values and eliminate the need for too much detail. We will also learn how to use the color wheel so we can more easily mix color that suggests the light without trying to copy what we see. Please see the required supply list below for needed materials. Before heading out to paint on Wednesday, the instructor will give a 2-hour lecture beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Art Center. Students need to be prepared for outside painting, weather permitting. Space is limited; please contact the Art Center at [email protected] for workshop information and registration. Artworks created during the Workshop are not eligible for the Plein Air Event judging and awards on Sunday. *CLASS REGISTRATION is not included in the standard event registration* Call (706) 632-2144 for questions regarding this course and registration. Payment is required to register for BRMAA courses. You may pay via PayPal above, over the phone, or visit The Art Center located at 420 West Main Street, Blue Ridge, GA 30513 to pay in person.

Instructor and Plein Air Judge: Phil Starke
Phil grew up in a military family where he spent several years in Europe and was influenced by the museums and art work that he was exposed to. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago where he studied figure painting and drawing. After living and painting in the Midwest for a number of years, he and his family moved to Tucson, Arizona. The southwest, along with Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado was a great inspiration for his painting. Towards the end of 2019, Phil and his wife moved to Georgia to help with kids and grandkids, but he makes several painting trips each year back to Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Phil is a member of Plein Air Painters of America and the California Art Club.
