The Fine Art of Silverpoint Drawing

Intermediate & Advanced
August 28, 2020-1 Session (Friday)
10:30 am-5:00 pm

Instructor: Colleen Sterling
Class Fee:   $35.00 non-members + $35.00 Supply Fee

Free to BRMAA members + $35.00 Supply Fee
Before the advent of the common pencil, artists of the 15th century had to work-up their studies for egg tempera paintings using either charcoal, ink or a metal wire held by a stylus known as metalpoint, silver being the most favored.  Students will learn this ancient technique which is a superb medium for precision and fine detail.  The projects include completed drawings in the silverpoint medium on traditionally prepared papers.  Students will learn techniques on how to prepare drawing surfaces to receive silverpoint “leads”, how silverpoint differs from standard graphite pencils, how the masters used the medium and how to procure supplies and materials.  The Instructor will supply silver rods, specialty papers, reference material, and trace paper.   There is a short supply list for the class offered upon registering for the class.  Students are welcome to bring a lunch.  A great class to learn some ancient and historical techniques for drawing.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Colleen Sterling

Colleen Sterling is a professional artist and arts educator with extensive exhibition and teaching experience.  In college she was an arts major with a history minor.  It has been the latter that has motivated her to explore the historical use of art materials related to the techniques of past masters.  In 2008, Colleen began serious study into the traditional techniques of egg tempera painting which she continues to this day, as well as all of the related disciplines for preparing for the use of the medium.
To coincide with Colleen's Artist-in-Residence exhibition at the Blue Ridge Mountains Art Center in Blue Ridge, GA, where she will debut her egg tempera paintings, she will offer a day long workshop.
Colleen is one of our Instructors at the Art Center that teaches Drawing by appointment.
