ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Joyce Clair, Watercolor Artist
Joyce enjoys painting landscapes in watercolors with a representational impressionist style. She is drawn to dramatic lighting and uses transparent colors that mingle on the painting surface. She paints on cold press watercolor paper, Yupo paper, and watercolor canvas. Her works may be seen at ArtWorks in Hiawassee, Murphy Art Center, Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association, Helen Arts & Heritage Center, and Brasstown Valley Resort.
Joyce took drawing and photography classes at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. in the early 1990’s. Then she began watercolor classes weekly for two years with Dr. Morris Green of the Maryland College of Art & Design. Joyce also attended workshops with well-known watercolor artists Frank Webb, Zoltan Szabo, Skip Lawrence, and Tom Lynch. Her watercolor works are influenced by the watercolor master, Ed Whitney (1891-1987).
Since retiring from her Nurse Practitioner career and moving to the Georgia mountains, Joyce now shares her enthusiasm for watercolor painting by offering group and private classes. Classes for beginners are designed to be fun and easy while learning basic techniques. Workshops for intermediate students focus on elements and principles of design to improve paintings. Joyce also leads a plein air painting group twice monthly in and around Hiawassee, Georgia.
In addition to watercolor painting, Joyce loves to paint with colorful alcohol inks. She applies the ink to a variety of surfaces such as Yupo paper, ceramic tile, and glass. Another passion is fiber art involving crochet and weaving of fabric into baskets and mats. Visit her facebook page “Joyce Clair Art” to see current paintings and crafts, upcoming classes, and plein air outings.
Joyce is a member of Mountain Regional Arts & Crafts Guild, Mountain Arts Association, Southern Appalachian Artist Guild, North Georgia Arts Guild, Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association, Helen Arts & Heritage Center, and Valley River Art Guild.
