Let's Get Real: Acrylic Painting Workshop

Intermediate & Advanced
July 19 & 20, 2025
2 Sessions (Saturday & Sunday)

10:30 am - 5:00 pm (Saturday)
11:00 am - 4:30 pm (Sunday)

Instructor: Marla McCormick
Class Fee: $175.00 non-members + $35.00 supply fee

               $157.50 BRMAA members + $35.00 supply fee
In this two-day workshop, artist and instructor Marla McCormick will demonstrate and explain how she uses acrylic paints on watercolor board to achieve depth and realistic details in a painting. Working from photographs, either yours or hers, you will learn the basics of mixing and applying acrylic paints to watercolor board. Discover how transparent washes and translucent glazes can help you achieve depth in a painting. Also learn which brushes to use, when, and with what mixture of paint, to produce realistic effects. Explore the relationships between light and dark and see how the balance adds to the realism of the painting. Note that the supply fee covers watercolor board, paint, and brushes sufficient for use in the class, should you need them. We will not be painting on canvas or using oil paints. See the Supply List for other suggested and needed materials, and also see the Class Objectives for more specific information.

My interest in, and love of, drawing and painting began very early in life and was a daily event until my Fine Art professors convinced me that until I understood “abstract expressionism” I could not consider myself an artist. My Architecture professors thought my attention to detail and accuracy worked just fine, so that is where I landed for years.

I have been painting “professionally” for over 25 years now, and do not plan to stop anytime soon. At first, I casually painted local scenes that attracted my attention and hung them on my wall, but as I started running out of wall space I began entering competitions, which led to participating in art shows, which – eventually – led to teaching.
