Artist in Residence
Robert Choe-Henderson
Paper Artist Artist Statement: Robert Choe-Henderson is a gay Korean American artist and educator from Florida. Inspired by the resiliency of the Asian diaspora casting across fine arts, craft, and book cultures, Robert uses his training in traditional papermaking and book arts techniques to explore ethnic and gender dynamics within Asian American identity through an interdisciplinary approach to exhibition and scholarship. His adaptations with hanji (traditional Korean paper) are profound in his sculptural artist’s books and woven vessels, bringing tangibility to remembrance. And through veils of hanji, narratives connect Korean roots with American jadedness. Robert’s mission is to promote and teach the rich histories of Korean craft as part of a small handful of hanji instructors in the United States. His work is exhibited globally, housed in many collections across the US, and continues to evolve with his persistent exploration of how paper occupies space. Robert holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts from Western Carolina University, and a Master of Fine Arts in Book Arts from the University of Iowa Center for the Book. He serves on the board for the Cherokee County Arts Council of NC. |
