In this two day workshop, you will learn and explore the many ways color can be used to create a dynamic design, to lead the viewer's eye through a painting, to create mood and atmosphere, to tell an emotional story, and to make a poetic statement. Day One of this workshop will include a slideshow presentation, a demonstration, and color studies. Day Two will be for creating a dynamic painting by applying the techniques and knowledge gained from Day One. Pinnick will do a short demonstration of how to start a new painting by planning a color temperature map within her design. Students will be working from a photograph supplied.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Brenda Kirkwood Pinnick is a lifelong artist whose career path has taken her in many creative directions over her lifetime. She has designed sets and costumes for theatre and performing groups, designed and illustrated for Hallmark Cards, working in the gift and party division, in Kansas City. Brenda has been an Art Director and Designer, working in the craft and hobby industry for 10 years, where she had her own hour on QVC and on HSN with her private line of scrapbooking products. She had designed 3 fabric collections for Henry Glass, a high end quilting fabric manufacturer, as well as rugs and stationery products for mass market. Brenda is known and admired for her color sensibilities. She has studied color extensively and loves sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for color with her students.
Brenda is originally from Michigan and is now living in the Atlanta, GA area where she works en plein air and in her home studio. She enjoys pushing the envelope where color is concerned, using color as an expressive element in her paintings. Brenda studied fine art with an emphasis on painting in college then, later in life graduated from the prestigious Creative Circus in Atlanta with a certificate in design and a professional portfolio of work. Upon graduation, she was recruited by Hallmark Cards to work as a hybrid designer creating gift wrap and gift bags, party-ware and invitations.
Brenda returned to fine art painting four years ago and is passionate about working en plein air. She believes it’s the only way to learn to paint, using natural light and settings. “There is nothing better than working from direct observation, on a glorious day, out in nature.” When the weather doesn’t permit working out of doors, she uses her plein air studies to create larger studio works and also turns to floral still lifes.
"I create art which is about light and color. When perfectly paired, the two can lift our spirits, can transform the mundane into the spectacular. My job is to open up my sensitivities and allow the poetry of my surrounding world to enter into my emotions. I allow myself to openly express my reaction to what it is I'm painting, be it landscape, still life or other. I want to help others experience the magic of seeing like an artist sees. When the weather doesn't permit outdoor painting, I spend time creating larger works, using my plein-air experiences and studies to inform my work.”
